A minor stab at blog feng shui.

I've made a few changes to the blog layout, mostly minor things like the link list and the mobile template, and may make a few more as I learn about how they come across.  It's been a fat long time since I've done any such things, and if you have any suggestions on this, please do feel free to comment, as my mind is at least a little bit on the subject.  (And if any of you know how to take greater control of the captcha function in Blogger, beyond the simple "yes/no" of turning it on and off, I'd love to know about it.  :-)

Your blog has always been nice and clean, easy to navigate, so you don't need to do much, I think.

The "captcha" bugger is a problem in almost every blog and website that accepts comments, so you are certainly not alone looking for better options.

Unfortunately, there aren't many just now. The folks who put out the "captcha" thing have actually improved it lately, but the central problem remains. Bots and spammers can read the letters ALMOST as well as people sometimes, and even better other times. They learn to read it while we struggle with it - and we don't generally have top end diagnostic software to aid us like they do.

What I don't understand is what the spammers and bots get out of it. I've been told that if even .1% of the people who see a spam post click on the link, they make enough to pay their bills. That, of course, doesn't explain all the crap spam posts that don't include links. What in the word do they get out of it?

Anyway, I decided to go with moderated comments at my blog. I don't get many, and it is easy to see and respond to them each time. The hundred or so spam posts are caught by a filter and easily disposed of with one click. I don't even bother to look at them anymore, since the filter has never snagged a legitimate post yet.

You don't get that many comments either, so I'd suggest you turn the captcha off, and the moderation mode on. Do install the best spam filter software... http://akismet.com/?return=true
